Teachers' Reflection

Our study trip to Fujian province was a fantastic experience. Our first visit was Quanzhou and we admired its remarkable past, where the harmony between different civilizations and religions combined during the height of the Silk Maritime road.

Our second stop was in the Hakka villages. I enjoyed spending two days in its impressive earth-built structures, “Tulous”, that made me feel like I was in a classic Kung Fu movie.

Thank you colleagues for the great Quanzhou and Hakka Tulou study trip! I learnt a lot from this trip and I am very grateful to be part of it.

Quanzhou is the place where I was borned. I migrated to Hong Kong since I was three so I do not know much about my hometown. Throughout the trip, I learnt different culture and religious background of my hometown. As a teacher facilitator to students, I could let students know more about the tea, Fujian culture and Fujian dialect. Students were curious about the culture of Quanzhou and Hakka Tulou.

Also, this is my first time to go to Hakka Tulou, I found satisfaction when I saw students working hard in asking questions about the Tulou structure and other information. They had high motivation in learning. I am glad that they tried their best in solving problems and this is important as this is one of our main theme of the ELW week, “To explore the cultural and social differences between the community they visit and increase their awareness of cultural diversity”.

I do help that students can develop good study habits and always work as team. Not only for academic studies, but also helping themselves to develop positive attitude and personality in their life.

The weather wasn’t being very kind to us in these four days. However, I was very much impressed by our students’ engagement, especially during discussion and sharing time. Throughout the trip, students were exposed to a rich historical and cultural environment. The experience has definitely benefited them to have a deeper understanding of the Hakka culture.

Students' Reflection

After this trip, I have learnt a lot of knowledge, including history and culture of Hakka and architecture. Let me take the place that we lived during the trip – Tulou as an example. I learnt about the ways to build a Tulou. The buildings impressed me so much because they are still standing strong even they experienced earthquakes. And I know what contraindications there are for Hakka culture.

After this trip to Hakka, I learnt much more about this mysterious clan, including the architecture where they live and why the building was built in that way, etc. Except for the knowledge, I also learnt to have perseverance since the weather was not goo and it was very cold. I learnt not to give up even I am in a difficult situation.

The S3 ELW trip was unforgettable, especially our stay in a Tulou. The shape of those buildings is amazingly circular. They are quite unique and can't be found elsewhere. I mostly enjoyed visiting the local primary school. We had organized games and prepared gifts for the students. They were so delighted and enjoyedplaying with us even thoughsometimes they were a bit out if control.I really miss the time we spent on this trip.
