S4 Study Trip to Malacca and

Tropical Rain Forest, Malaysia

  • The provider for the S4 Study Trip is Global Sapiens who employ experienced and qualified instructors and tutors who will work closely with our teachers to ensure your child's safety at all times.

  • The learning focus is about the unique social and economic history of Malacca once an important trading port as well as an environmental study of the tropical rain forest. The adventure and hands on activities are fun, challenging but very safe. They will develop your child's confidence, independence and team spirit.

Learning Targets

  1. I can identify an issue of Hong Kong and relate it to the visit in Melaka for my inquiry project.

  2. I can collect data and analyse the findings to address the issue of my inquiry project.

  3. I can present the findings of my inquiry-based project.

  4. I can suggest possible solutions to deal with the issue (problem).

As the global structure undergoes significant changes in the 21st century, the needs and demands for societies are different. In Hong Kong, the economy has shifted to knowledge-based economy which requires various generic skills, such as problem-solving and communication skills. Moreover, the changes as such have raised a number of issues in society and many of them have not been resolved.

Objectives

  1. Students gain a better understanding about at least one aspect of Hong Kong and Melaka.

  2. Students conduct an in-depth exploration about a chosen topic for inquiry.

  3. Students apply skills learned at school while conducting research and analyzing the situation in Hong Kong and Melaka.

  4. Students take an active ownership in planning the research project and their learning.

  5. Students think of solutions to the challenges in the chosen aspect of Hong Kong and Melaka.

  6. Students reflect upon their role about shaping the future of their society.

  7. Students demonstrate in different ways what they have learnt from their study and share this at Global     Learning Showcase (GLS).

Teachers' Reflection

I was very excited when I knew that I was going to Melaka in Malaysia, a UNESCO historical site with the S4 students. The most impressive moment was when I saw the S4 students served the others in the Child Care Centre. They picked off their shoes and played on the football court. They shared lots of joy during the sharing session. It was the first time in the life that our students tried to use their hand to take dinner with the children. Throughout the trip, I saw the students became more mature and independent. Moreover, they also learned how to conduct an in-depth exploration upon an issue of Hong Kong and relate it to their observation in Melaka. I really enjoy seeing them showing appreciation to the others and developing a caring attitude towards their world and become a global citizen.

Thanks to the S4 students, Ms Tam and MrTo who contribute a lot in this valuable and fruitful trip! The best way to multiply our happiness is to share it with others.

By Ms Jovita Wong

I am truly happy to have a chance to explore Melaka and Kuala Lumpur with Ms. Tam, Ms. Wong and our S.4 students in the Experiential Learning Week.

We went to different places in Melaka and Kuala Lumpur and learnt more about the history, culture and natural environment of Malaysia. In order to make learning happen in every place we visited, Ms. Wong and I prepared a learning booklet for the students. They did make good use of it throughout the trip. Good job, everyone!

To me, the most memorable spot is the Forest Research Institute Malaysia. It was my first time to walk around a rainforest! We saw a lot of interesting insects, plants and a gigantic lizard. The view was magnificent when we looked up to the canopy layer.

I enjoyed the discussion sessions with the students at night very much as everyone was so engaged in sharing their learning experiences. What really impressed me was that the students did an in-depth comparison between the education system in Hong Kong and that in Melaka.

I really learnt a lot!

Thank you very much, Ms Tam, Ms. Wong and my beloved S4 students!
